What is Hornet?
Hornet is a free .TEL address book application available for Blackberry® Smartphones. .TEL names are unique ID's like smith.tel to which all of the owners contact information can be attached. With Hornet, you just enter the .tel name and all of the contact information is immediately downloaded. If the owner ever changes or adds new contact information, the new information is updated in Hornet the next time the contact is refreshed.
How much does it cost?
Hornet is free!
Is it a replacement for my Blackberry address book?
Hornet works along side your native Blackberry® address book. Not everyone has a .TEL yet, but once you start using Hornet, you'll actively encourage your friends and business connections to get their .TEL names. Not only will it save you hours of data entry, it ensures that data is complete and always up to date.
What is a .TEL name?
A .TEL name is a unique ID like smith.tel or webnames.tel to which an individual or company can attach all their contact information, making it easier to exchange, store and manage contacts. It creates a single point of contact which is easy to remember and helps people stay connected, whether they’re family, friends or business connections.
Do I need a .TEL name to use Hornet?
No. Hornet is a place to store .TEL names.
How do I get my own .TEL name?
To get your name, or check whether it is still available, use the "Get your .TEL" search box in the side bar of every page.
Who is Webnames.ca?
Webnames.ca is a leading domain registrar and provider of .TEL names – and the provider of Hornet.
What are some example .TEL names that I can look at/add to Hornet?
What about Privacy?
Any contact data can be marked as private by the .TEL owner. Private data is encrypted with 1024 bit encryption. To see private data, you must have a free TelFriends account (see below) and be given permission by the .tel owner.
What is a TelFriends account, do I need one and where can I get one?
TelFriends is your single place to control, share and access private data. If you would like to see others private data, or share your private data, then you need to set up a TelFriends account. You can sign up for a free TelFriends account at www.telfriends.com
How do I view private data in Hornet?
If you have input your Login Credentials for TelFriends (see above), you can send a friend request to the .TEL owner from Hornet. Once they have accepted your request, select "Refresh Friends List" in the list view, then refresh the contact. If you had a friending relationship before using Hornet, private data should be available as soon as you enter your Login Credentials. The Hornet User Guide provides a step by step guide to viewing private data.
Which Blackberry® devices are supported?
Hornet supports Blackberry® Smartphones with OS 4.2 and higher including:
Blackberry® Storm Series
Blackberry® Bold Series
Blackberry® Curve Series
Blackberry® Pearl Series
Blackberry® 8800 Series
Which carriers/countries are supported?
Hornet will work in Canada, the U.S and in the UK. We welcome feedback about specific carriers as well as usage in other countries.
Is Hornet available for any devices other than Blackberry®?
At this time Hornet is only available for Blackberry®, and while other devices are being considered, no timeline has been set.
Superbook is a .TEL address book for iPhoneTM users, which can be downloaded for free at iTunes®, as can myTel, a .TEL management application for the iPhoneTM.
How do I edit a .TEL name?
The details of a .TEL name are maintained by the owner and cannot be edited. The Edit menu item allows you to change the display name to something other than the actual .TEL name and allows you to add the name to a category. Changing the display name only affects your device.
How do I assign a name to a category?
Highlight the name in the list view. Press the Menu button and select Edit from the menu. Assign the record to a category and save your changes.
How do I add/edit a category?
Hornet uses the global Blackberry categories. The alpha version does not include the facility to edit categories, but if you add or edit a category using the native Blackberry® address book, the changes will be reflected in Hornet.
What is the Event Log?
The event log is a temporary record of commands and responses between your device, the carrier and servers. If you are experiencing problems with Hornet, we may ask that you email the log to us to help diagnose the problem.
What is the Additional Information link in each .TEL record?
.TEL owners can add structured and free text information that help to identify them, input an address or include keywords for better ranking in search engines
Can I update my .TEL contact information with Hornet?
Not at this time. Updating contact information is part of the Hornet roadmap, but at this time Hornet is only for storing, viewing and using .TEL contact information. Contact information can be updated though the TelHosting interface. For more information, please see www.webnames.ca/telhosting
How do I become a reseller of .TEL names?
Webnames.ca offers a simple co-branded 3 step process to sell .TEL names online. Please see the .TEL reseller page for more information.
Can I distribute Hornet on my site?
You may create links to Hornet, but you may not store or distribute the binary files from another server without prior agreement with Webnames.ca. Contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
Does Hornet support display ads?
No. While .TEL names are sometimes used to create free and pay directories featuring premium display ads, Hornet is designed to be an address book and does not render ads.
